Thomas Miro Fischinger was born in Ljubljana, Slovenia at the end of the Second World War. He lived with the Potocnik family in Ljubljana for nine years. When Thomas was nine years old, he was reunited with his family in Chicago, Illinois. He became a teacher in Chicago Public Schools and then joined the Peace Corps. He was teaching in a teachers college of San Juan Bosco in Puno, Peru for two and a half years. Thomas married Maria Caceres Olazo Monroy in Puno, Peru. Maria and Thomas have two daughters that live in the United States.

After 38 years of teaching, Thomas retired in 2005. Two years ago Thomas became a citizen of Slovenia.

Thomas loves traveling, photography, gardening, fixing his apartment houses, drawing, fishing, and hunting.

He loves his birth place and his relatives. In a few years, he will permanently move to Slovenia with his wife Maria.


Maria Dolores Caceres Olazo Monroy de Fischinger was born in Puno, Peru. She married Thomas in 1970.

Maria graduated from University of Illinois Circle Campus and became a bilingual teacher with the Chicago Board of Education. After 24 years of teaching, she retired in January of 2006.

Maria published a book in 1985, Manual Phonetico de Lecturay y Escritura Castellana

Recently, Maria is writing poetry and short stories. Soon she will publish a book. In the near future she plans to go to Spain and take some more writing courses.

Some of the poems that she wrote in Spanish and in English shows that she loves Slovenia.
